Create Miniature Book Holiday Ornaments
Crafts, Home & Garden, Visual Arts
Create eye-catching miniature book Christmas ornaments in this introductory bookbinding class. We’ll make sculptural books with surprising folded structures and festive hardcover books that can decorate your tree.
This class explains the fundamentals of bookbinding, including proper techniques for folding, stitching, and gluing, as well as varied binding styles using high-quality decorative materials and traditional binding tools. One book will be bound in a lotus style that can hang on your tree in two different shapes: folded closed into a neat square, or opened into a three-dimensional star. The other book will be a traditional hardcover book with blank pages, perfect for writing holiday memories to be remembered each year as you decorate your tree.
You will leave the class with two handbound ornament books, and the skills to create more handbound books in the future. The class will also include an introduction to the world of handmade books, and the opportunity to view and handle a collection of professionally made examples.
In keeping with the holiday spirit of giving, your involvement in this workshop will also benefit a local non-profit organization, Thistle Farms, in which women who have survived lives of prostitution and addiction support themselves by creating handmade paper and natural bath and body products. Your participation allows me to teach a free bookbinding class for the women of Thistle Farms, following the "one-for-one" model. I'll volunteer my time, and part of the fee you've paid helps fund the supplies. You will also have the opportunity to use handmade Thistle Farms papers for the pages of your own books if you'd like.

About the teacher: Katie Gonzalez
Katie Gonzalez first studied the art of bookmaking in Cortona, Italy during the summer of 2006. Visiting a medieval bindery, working with luxurious materials, and learning to make paper by hand instilled a sense of traditional techniques into her work. She combines that background with her contemporary graphic design degree. Katie runs her own bindery, linenlaid&felt, creating one-of-a-kind journals, photo albums, guest books, baby books, and artist's books. She lives and works in East Nashville with her husband and her brindle bullmastiff.
